The country of Luxembourg is approximately the size of the state of Rhode Island. It’s a beautiful country with an interesting history, but if I am being honest, there’s a limited amount to do. Luxembourg City (the capital) can easily be seen and conquered in 2 days (or less), but there are also a couple fun day trips you can take to see other parts of the country as well. It’s an interesting place to stop if you want to hit another country passing through western Europe, but it’s hardly a place I would go out of my way for…

Luxembourg has a nice city center plaza and a beautiful castle to walk around at night, but of course, I spent most of my time there hopping from one foodie spot to the next. It has a very international culture because the European Court of Justice is based in Luxembourg City. In my opinion, the best food in Luxembourg is Italian; Bacchus, which is right in the city center is a little touristy, but the waiters are nice and the food is delicious. Also, La Feluca is a great pizza restaurant just a couple minutes walk from the main plaza – best pizza in Luxembourg! Finally, Charles is a European sandwich shop just 1 or 2 minutes from the plaza and it’s to die for! Best sandwiches I’ve had ever had – I still try to recreate them at home. For breakfast we found a spot that we returned to a couple of times during the week we were there called the Chocolate House – ithas a very enjoyable, European breakfast platter with croissants, butter and jam, and of course, hot chocolate. Their variety of hot chocolate options are vast and they all come with steaming hot milk and a wooden spoon covered in the chocolate of your choice. Lastly, the Golden Bean is the only international style coffee shop in Luxembourg City – this is the place to go if you need a morning or afternoon latte pick-me-up while you’re there.

I usually try to avoid touristy hot spots when traveling but the Luxembourg City Visitor Center is a phenomenal resource for discounts and fun things to do as well as general information on all the other places worth visiting in the country. All the people there speak English so it’s worth the stop inside for more information.

As for day trips, the Vianden Castle is only about an hour drive from the capital (as are most places in Luxembourg), it’s is a massively beautiful castle on top of a hill with informative audio guides, and student discounts. Just down the hill in the town there is an international café that plays old, vintage cartoons called Ancien Cinema Café Club that has decent food and a fun atmosphere. The other day trip we embarked on was to go hiking in the Mullerthal region. It’s a beautifully wooded and green region of the country with great hike s and lots of waterfalls. Well worth the trip if you need to get out of the city and into nature a little bit.

Let us know if there are other hidden gems in Luxembourg we missed!

XOXO,
